A layered historical atlas · c. 1–2026 CE

one geographic frame.

FIELD NOTES

What the map refuses to pretend

01

Modern borders are a frame

Today’s boundary helps orient the reader. It did not contain most earlier courts, trade routes, languages or kinship networks.

02

Identity changes over time

“Bamar,” “Mon,” “Shan,” “Rakhine” and other labels are useful, but never perfectly fixed across two thousand years.

03

Silences matter

Court chronicles and inscriptions favour capitals. Chin, Kachin, Karen, Kayah, Wa, Pa-O and many other histories require oral, linguistic and local evidence too.

How to read this atlas

Confidence is part of the story.

Established

Supported by converging archaeological, epigraphic or well-documented evidence.

Probable

A reasonable scholarly reconstruction, but dates, routes or extent remain approximate.

Disputed

Chronicle traditions or interpretations that scholars contest. The atlas shows the disagreement rather than choosing certainty.

Hazard records

Instrument readings, written damage reports and geological traces have different precision. “Natural hazard” does not mean that vulnerability or loss was natural.

Keyboard: use ← and → for adjacent events, / to search, and Esc to close panels.

Sources, scope & method

This is an interpretive learning tool, not a cadastral, live conflict or hazard-prediction map. Dates are normalized for navigation; each card preserves uncertainty in its wording and confidence status. Disaster chapters are selected examples, not a complete catalogue.

Editorial choice

Post-2021 front lines change rapidly and can create safety risks. This edition records the national political rupture but does not plot current tactical positions.
